Gospel John 15:9-17
By nature, whom do we love more – daddy or mummy? Mummy! When we were small and we fell down, whom did we run to? Mummy, mummy, mummy! Never daddy, daddy, daddy! Even the child’s first word is Mum. After God’s love, there is no greater love than the love of a mother. And the love begins in the womb.
I have watched many animal programmes and how the mothers behave, they protect their offspring. The gift of maternity is the most precious gift that a woman can receive.
A child came into the kitchen and gave his mother a list – R50 for cleaning the garden, R20 for cleaning the toilet, R10 for feeding the dog, R10 for feeding the cat, R20 for closing the doors at night, etc. The bottom of the list had a total of R1050 owing. The mother flipped over the list and wrote – For the nights I was awake with you and didn’t sleep, no charge, for the nights that you were sick and I ran to the hospital, no charge, for the times I helped you to dress and wash, no charge, for the times I helped you to do your homework, no charge, for the many times I changed your nappies, no charge, etc. Everything I have paid with great love.
Many times we behave before God like the child with the list. I go to Mass every Sunday, I pray the Rosary, I belong to this group, I am part of this and this, I do charity work, I support a lot of people… I need payment. Why are You not listening to my prayers? Look at the Cross, everything has been done because of love for us.
Even though mothers behave like angels, they are humans. They get tired and sick and need to feel our love. They need understanding. Many times they don’t express their desires because they are busy running up and down for you. A mother’s heart behaves like God’s heart.
If you have a mother in Heaven, ask for forgiveness. If you have problems with your mother that is living in another country, call her. If your mother is close to you right now, tell her you love her.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
